Elephant Rocks Live Up To Their Name
Well, yikes. They say the rocks are big. They are not kidding. Elephant Rocks Park is located right outside of Pilot Knob, Missouri, which is really close to where they reenact the Civil War battle of Fort Davidson (for all of you history nutz). The drive there is stunning, though, truly. Rolling hills and lots and lots of lush trees surround you as you drive the distance.
The park is wicked cool. My boys loved it. We joked that trolls must have pooped there a long time ago and the droppings had fermented. Yes, gross, I know…but when you see the huge rocks you’ll understand. And hey, it’s okay to talk with your kiddos like that. It makes ‘em laugh and stuff.
Anyhoo, they call it the Elephant Braille Park, and as you walk along the disintegrating cement path (which is actually charming, although it sounds deadly), there are areas where little signs poke up explaining this and that…and they are also in Braille! Very neat-o.
You climb upward, huge rocks everywhere around you, until you reach the top…GOR-geous!
Kids and adults will love this, seriously.
Get to the top and find where people have carved their names into the stones. The names add an eerie, sort of romantic feel up there. You can also feel the pride of those people…that they made it to the top and possibly had something to do with the park being there in the first place.

SAD TRUTH BROUGHT TO LIGHT: there are crazy hillbillies that tend to visit the park, too. Yes, I know, but it’s a free country, so what are you gonna do? Just be alert and aware of the people around you when you go anywhere with your little ones (or just plain at all).
Bring sunblock (the sun in Missouri is intense), and definitely water bottles!
All in all, as far as being fun for adults and kiddos alike, I give it 4 out of 5 stars…I only docked it a star because of the hillbillies (sorry hillbillies, but you have GOT to know how scary you are).
I mean, really.
